Walmart does it too

Keeping with the theme... Walmart recently unveiled new packaging for their Great Value store brand. "In addition to product testing, Walmart redesigned Great Value packaging graphics to create a consistent, recognizable look throughout the store, making it easier for customers to find their favorite products. The new Great Value packaging offers easy-to-read nutrition labels and more appetizing food photography."

New Tropicana packaging

Pepsi has done it again - this time with their Tropicana orange juice. A little bland, a little generic, very sterile, almost pharmaceutical, but who knows, maybe the clean look will stand out on the shelf. There seems to be a big trend going on with this semi-generic look - it's everywhere - almost like creativity is slowly being phased out of our everyday lives as we're all being forced to see the same drab images and buy the same, boring, mass produced products.

The new look. Also available in capsules and suppositories.

A look at the old packaging - ahhhhhh... Orange Juice.

New branding of Walmart and Pepsi

In a recent road trip, I had my first glimpse of the new Walmart image and I must say, it's awesome. First of all, before going any further, I hate Walmart. Just the thought of having to make a trip there makes me start to sweat and get nervous. True story... my wife and I have actually parked a half full cart and left, due to being completely overwhelmed. This leads me right into their new logo and brand image - great job - I love it, but fortunately I have enough brains to not let it change my feeling about the store. The old logo screams that big, scary monster that Walmart truly is - big block, all caps type with a strong star in the middle to hyphenate. The new logo is bright and fun and much more friendly. As Walmart put it themselves, "This update to the logo is simply a reflection of the refresh taking place inside our stores and our renewed sense of purpose to help people save money so they can live better." Be right back, have to go puke. Don't get me started on the "live better" campaign, but refreshing - yes.

Moving on to Pepsi - I absolutely hate it and personally think this is going to be the biggest multi billion dollar flop ever. I appreciate the excellent design, but it's just not working for me and the Pepsi product as a whole. The look might do well for the diet and max products, but I just don't see a couple of bubbas or even regular joes like myself sitting around sipping out of one of those new bottles.

See what I mean about these new bottles?

New logotype designs

Trying to hammer out some new logotype ideas for my freelance business - here they are so far...

New Food Lion packaging

Since I'm at the local Food Lion at least 4 times a week (we go through water and milk at our house like crazy), I've been noticing all the new store brand packaging. Nothing overly exciting here, but an incredible improvement, plus they definitely accomplished their goal of giving all of their private label items a cohesive brand image. Nice Job Food Lion!
